| CCM Hockey HistoryCCM Hockey started out as Canada Cycle and Motor
Company Limited in 1899 out of Weston, Ontario, Canada. It was not until
1905 when the market for bicycles began to crash that CCM started making ice
hockey equipment. Over the next 30 years CCM dominated the ice hockey
skate market where over 90% of players wore
CCM
skates. Even the leading scorer in the NHL between 1939 and 1969 wore
the Tackaberry hockey boot with CCM Prolite blade. The CCM Tacks began as
a boot designed by shoemaker George Tackaberry in 1905. Hall of famer Joe
Hall felt his ice hockey boot was lacking and went to George Tackaberry to
design him a better one. Mr. Tackaberry did and the first pair of Tack
skates were made. The boot was leather and featured a reinforced toe and
heel. CCM got the Tackaberry name when he died in 1937 and turned out the
most recognizable skate today, the CCM Tack line. CCM still remains an
industry leader in hockey equipment design and innovation. They introduced
such innovations as the Heel Wedge, Instapump skate, and Vakutacks. CCM
over the years has swallowed up many other companies such as Jofa, Koho, and
Heaton. In last couple of years CCM was then bought by Reebok.
Reebok did not get rid of the CCM logo but decided to run their own products
designed by CCM under the Rbk logo along side with CCM. Recently Reebok
was bought by Adidas so it will be interesting to see what happens to CCM in the
next few years.
